LACS Offers Free Museum Admission the First Week of February
The Luxembourg American Cultural Society invites all residents of Ozaukee, Washington & Sheboygan counties to come explore its museum at no charge during the annual “LACS Free Days” January 31st through February 3rd, 2024. Free admission is offered to those residents during regularly scheduled open hours: 10 am – 4 pm Wednesday through Saturday of that week. Proof of residency is required for free admission. Kids activities are included.
The center’s unique Roots & Leaves Museum tells the tale of Luxembourg, the world’s only Grand Duchy, past and present. Guests will learn about Luxembourg immigration to America as well as the impact Luxembourg immigrants and their descendants have had and continue to make on life in America.
The museum is housed in the Mamer-Hansen Luxembourgian stone barn originally built in 1872 by Luxembourg immigrant Jacob Mamer. The barn was carefully dismantled and moved from its original location in the Town of Port Washington in 2005, and rebuilt to house the museum at 100 Peter Thein Avenue in Belgium, which officially opened in 2009.
Its exhibit panels, display cases, furnishings and artwork were all gifts from the people of Luxembourg through the country’s ministry of Culture and were crafted by Luxembourgish artisans.
The Cultural Center is also home to the J. B. Krier Wëllkomm Centre, featuring the Luxembourg American Family Tree – a nostalgia-inducing sculpture created in Luxembourg, and a gift shop boasting a variety of Luxembourgish-themed items.
The Dooley-Wagner Research Center, another unique facet of the Luxembourg American Cultural Center, is the largest research center for Luxembourg studies and genealogy outside of Luxembourg. It is a treasure trove of information and resources for historians, genealogists and researchers, and is open by appointment only.
