Virtual LACS Cultural Conference to Celebrate 100 Years of Women’s Suffrage in Luxembourg and the United States
BELGIUM, WISCONSIN, JULY 10, 2020. This year’s 14th annual Cultural Conference, presented by the Luxembourg American Cultural Society, celebrates the centenary of women’s suffrage movements with “Votes for Women: 100 Years of Voting Rights in Luxembourg and the United States.” The conference, typically held in Wisconsin as a part of Luxembourg Fest week activities, is instead presenting virtually for the first time, Thursday, August 6th from 12:00 pm – 4:00 pm and Friday, August 7th from 12:00 pm – 3:30 pm, with experts speaking from both the US and Luxembourg.
“We are excited for the virtual presentation of this year’s Cultural Conference, as this technology will enable attendees from all over the world to join us for the first time,” said LACS curator and conference organizer Serena Stuettgen.
Presenters will explore the history of women’s voting rights; tell riveting stories of how individuals built upon each other’s successes; and discuss similarities and differences between the events simultaneously occurring on different continents, as Luxembourg signed universal suffrage into law in 1919 and the U.S. was not far behind, ratifying women’s suffrage into law in 1920.
Pre-registration is required at www.lacs.lu/culturalconference. All registered attendees will receive a recording to view the conference at their leisure, if they are unable to attend during the live presentation. The conference is sponsored by the Luxembourg Ministry of Culture, the Michels Family Trust, and a grant from the Wisconsin Humanities Council, all of which enables the LACS to offer this conference for just a five-dollar technology fee.
All in-person activities for Luxembourg Fest Week have been postponed to August 13-15, 2021.
